A biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility has been constructed in Watertown, Massachusetts, by the pharmaceutical and medical device company Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK). The cutting-edge greenhouse-like 350,000 square foot facility has the capacity to produce millions of biologics, vaccines, and other complicated items. The facility serves a vast network of hospitals and other healthcare groups and has the capacity to produce 75 million doses of pharmaceuticals and immunisations annually. Merck now has a $7.8 billion capacity to create biopharmaceuticals on its books after purchasing the pharmaceutical and medical device company Chiron Corporation for $1.3 billion last year. The majority of the capacity is in Germany. However, the production footprint has grown.
